MA in Early Christian Studies

The Department of Classics and the Department of Theology jointly offer the M.A. in Early Christian Studies (ECS).

The program develops students’ abilities in at least two ancient Christian languages and literatures (Latin and/or Greek and/or Syriac) and imparts a broad background of knowledge and method in the intellectual, historical, and social contexts of early Christianity.

For students who are primarily interested in studying the New Testament and/or early Christian literature and theology, the ECS program has historically provided an alternative to the MTS programs in Biblical Studies and History of Christianity. Many prospective students have elected to apply to both the MTS program and the ECS program.
