There are many paths students can take to incorporate a theology degree into their time at Notre Dame.

Theology Major (34 credits)

University requirements:

  • WKFT - first university theology

  • WKDT - second university theology

Major requirements:

  • Introduction to Old Testament

  • Introduction to New Testament

  • Christian Traditions I

  • Christian Traditions II

  • Proseminar (1 credit)

Elective requirements:

  • Elective #1 (4xxxx)

  • Elective #2 (4xxxx)

  • Elective #3 (4xxxx)

  • Elective #4 (4xxxx)

  • Elective #5 (2xxxx or higher)

Note:

  • Major requirements may be taken in any order. Traditions I and Intro to OT are offered every fall; Traditions II, Intro to New Testament, and the Proseminar are offered every spring.

  • Two electives may be satisfied by an ancient language class (Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Syriac, etc.).

  • Three 1-credit theology classes may be bundled to satisfy an elective requirement.

  • Students with a major GPA of 3.66 or higher may apply to write an honors thesis during their senior year.


Supplemental Theology Major (25 credits)

Major requirements:

  • Intro to Old Testament or Intro to New Testament

  • Christian Traditions I

  • Christian Traditions II

  • Proseminar (1 credit)

Elective requirements:

  • Elective #1 (4xxxx)

  • Elective #2 (4xxxx)

  • Elective #3 (2xxxx or higher)

Note:

  • Major requirements may be taken in any order. Traditions I and Intro to OT are offered every fall; Traditions II, Intro to New Testament, and the Proseminar are offered every spring.

Joint Major in Philosophy & Theology (60 credits)

  • WKFP: first university philosophy

  • WKSP / WKCD - second university philosophy / Catholicism and the Disciplines

Major requirements:

  • Ancient and Medieval Philosophy

  • Modern Philosophy

  • Formal Logic

  • Intro to Old Testament or Intro to New Testament

  • Christian Traditions I

  • Christian Traditions II

  • Ancient Language (2 semesters)

  • Philo / Theo Joint Seminar

  • Senior Thesis (3 credits)

Elective requirements:

  • Two upper level electives in Philosophy

  • Two upper level electives in Theology

  • Two upper level electives in Philosophy, Theology, or Ancient Language

* Major requirements may be taken in any order.

Note:

  • The required senior thesis is completed as a 3-credit course. Students with a major GPA of 3.66 or higher are encouraged to apply to write an honors thesis, for which an additional three credits are required.

Liturgical Music Ministry Minor (21 credits)

University requirements:

  • WKFT: first university theology

  • WKDT: second university theology

Practicum:

  • One credit of voice, organ, or piano lessons offered through the Department of Music

  • One credit of participation in a liturgical choir in the Basilica

  • One additional credit from either of the above options

Theology:

  • Two elective theology courses in either sacramental theology or liturgical theology and history

Music

  • Music Theory

  • Elective music course related to liturgy
