Theology is the discipline of “faith seeking understanding,” an intellectually rigorous and integrative pursuit that allows us to know God and all things in light of God, central among which is the human person. Our theology major, supplemental major, and joint major in philosophy and theology all provide students great freedom in developing their own course of study.
Theology majors are built on coursework in Christian scripture and tradition, through which students learn to engage with texts of scripture and gain an understanding of the central works of Christianity over time. Students can pursue elective coursework in any areas of their choosing, from ancient Judaism to environmental ethics to Catholic dialogue with Islam.
The joint major in philosophy and theology is for students with a special interest in advanced work in both fields. In addition to core theology courses and electives, students in the joint major study ancient, medieval, and modern philosophy as well as a classical language, forming an interdisciplinary understanding of humanity.
With roughly 50 distinct courses offered each semester, you are sure to find a wealth of attractive options to complete the requirements of a major or minor. Beyond the classroom, you can enhance your studies by conducting independent research, writing a senior thesis, and getting involved in the broader university community.
“My studies in theology were deeply and integrally formative. The integrity of study was manifest in the strength of the curriculum, the active concern and mentorship of the faculty, and the strength of community among my fellow students. They provided the foundation from which I approached my undergraduate education and from which I continue to approach my adult life. I'm deeply grateful.”
“My study of theology informed my understanding of political science. It shaped how I looked at social reforms and human rights injustices, and fueled my desire to holistically safeguard the human person.”
“Studying theology helped me approach my study of biochemistry with more wonder. From my studies, I better understand and am able to articulate the relational unity between faith and science and show how faith and science aren't in conflict.”
“Theology shaped my other majors and minors. But the reverse was also true. Theology pushed the premises of inquiry in my other majors and minors and added a dimension that otherwise would not have been there. Conversely, my study of other subjects helped me to better formulate questions for theology and to delve into areas that furthered my theological imagination.”
