Expanding the Horizons

The Tantur Ecumenical Institute was founded fifty years ago as a part of a new flowering of ecumenical dialogue stimulated by the Second Vatican Council. This conference celebrates the contributions that Tantur has made not just by looking to the past but by looking ahead. Thus, this conference is at the same time an attempt to chart one path forward that might bring ecumenical dialogue out of its “state of hibernation” (Walter Cardinal Kasper). What will ecumenical dialogue look like in the next fifty years? What contributions can Tantur make, along with its sponsoring institution, the University of Notre Dame? This conference is guided by two premises: first that ecumenical dialogue has become and will increasingly be a global endeavor, with common features in different regions of the globe, but also with a diversity of opportunities, resources and challenges. Second, it is premised on the need to understand better the relationship between ecumenical dialogue and interfaith dialogue, since ecumenical dialogue in different parts of the World Church do not go on in a vacuum but in contexts where interreligious dialogue is exigent as well. After an opening plenary on the past, present and future of ecumenical and interreligious dialogue, a series of panels will consider the issues in different regions of the world: Latin America; Africa; South and Southeast Asia, and the Middle East itself.
