Biography
Katie Mascari is a 2nd year PhD student in Moral Theology and Christian Ethics. After earning her Bachelors degree in Education from Texas A&M University, she worked in parish ministry in the Archdiocese of Newark, New Jersey as part of the McGrath Institute's Echo Graduate Service Program at Notre Dame.
Katie's research explores the role of the U.S. parish today through the lens of Catholic social teaching, political theology, and virtue ethics. Using ethnographic methods, she aims to understand and articulate the theologies and practices that bind parish communities amid post-Covid isolation, consumer tendencies, and political polarization. As the geographic footprint of Catholic congregations expands through parish mergers and increased parish choice, Katie investigates the ideas and practices that help parishes adjust or retain their self-understanding as social institutions.
