Matthew Hovde, CSC

Biography

Fr. Matthew, originally from Miami, FL, was ordained a Holy Cross Priest in April of 2016. Beginning in August of 2016, Fr. Matthew served as the rector of Zahm Hall, during which he also worked in Campus Ministry, with the McGrath Institute's ND Vision, the University Marching Band, and assisted in a pilot program for teaching theology in the residence halls. Beginning in the fall of 2019, he moved to Leuven, Belgium, where he earned his Research Master of Theology and STL (2020), and his PhD and STD in Theology (2024). His research and publications have focused primarily on the theology of the consecrated life, especially as it ties to questions of theological anthropology, ecclesiology, and liturgical expressions. His forthcoming monograph examines the constitutions of religious institutes and how they respond to such questions following the renewals instigated by the Second Vatican Council. In the classroom, Fr. Matthew works primarily with students preparing for professional ministry in the Catholic Church, where he strives for an integrative vision of theological education, linking broad theoretical concepts with practical and concrete expressions in the life of the Church. Additionally, Fr. Matthew serves on the Formation Staff at Moreau Seminary for the Congregation of Holy Cross.
