Master of Theological Studies

Welcome from the Director

David A. Clairmont

Master of Theological Studies Program

Thank you for your interest in the Master of Theological Studies (M.T.S.) program in the Department of Theology at the University of Notre Dame.  The M.T.S. program offers students the opportunity to pursue rigorous and critical theological study in the context of a collegial community of faculty and students from diverse ecclesial and cultural backgrounds.

The M.T.S. program is designed to prepare students to succeed in doctoral programs in theology, religious studies, and related fields, and we enjoy an excellent record of achievement in this area.  Students have the opportunity to study with top professors in their respective fields while engaging in conversation across our five areas: Biblical Studies, History of Christianity, Liturgical Studies, Moral Theology and Systematic Theology.  The faculty of the Department of Theology is one of the largest and most accomplished theological faculties in the country, and its members are distinguished by their extraordinary ability to carry on active research and teaching programs and while serving as conscientious mentors for their students.  Students in the M.T.S. program also have access to the courses and faculty of other departments in the University which enables them to envision and pursue creative research programs that link theological study to other academic areas.

In my role as director, I am assisted by our program administrator and by five colleagues who serve as area advisors for students in each area of study.  If you have questions about which area of study is the best fit for you, or if you would like to know more about the work of faculty and students in these areas, I encourage you to contact the area advisors.  If you have questions about the logistics of the program or the process of application, please contact me or our program administrator.
