Primary Area: Liturgical Studies

Biography

Paul J. Elhallal is a PhD candidate in Theology with a concentration in Liturgical Studies. Specializing in the history of Christian practice in the eastern Mediterranean, his research seeks to contextualize the historical practices of Syriac- and Arabic-speaking Christians in light of the various political, ecclesiastical, and cultural forces that bear upon them. His current project attempts to narrate a history of the Byzantinization of Antiochian liturgy by examining medieval Syriac and Arabic liturgical manuscripts in order to gain insight into the liturgical, linguistic, and cultural exchange between Antioch and Constantinople in the Middle Ages.

Paul completed a BA in Humanities and Theology at Villanova University before coming to Notre Dame, where he received his MTS in 2021 and anticipates his PhD in 2026. He currently resides in South Bend, Indiana with his wife Gabriella and their four children.
