The University of Notre Dame and the Consulate General of Israel to the Midwest are pleased to present “Building Bridges of Faith,” a photographic depiction of papal visits to the Holy Land. Forty-four photographs of four visits by Blessed Pope Paul VI, Pope Saint John Paul II, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, and Pope Francis are included in the exhibition at the Hesburgh Library on the Notre Dame campus. The exhibit will be on display until December 9, 2017 and is organized by Notre Dame International.
This exhibition and the partnership between the University of Notre Dame and the Consulate General of Israel to the Midwest represent a response to the Pope’s calling to “reflect deeply on the significance of the Jewish roots of our own faith” and to seek “mutual understanding of our spiritual heritage” (from the Address of Pope Francis on May 26, 2014, in Jerusalem).
“We’re grateful for the opportunity to share these remarkable photographs with the Notre Dame community,” said Michael Pippenger, vice president and associate provost for internationalization. “We are most thankful for the generosity of the Consulate General for partnering with us in this endeavor. Our hope is that when they see the exhibition people will be encouraged to reflect on the intersection of faith, place, and heritage.”
Opening events at the Hesburgh Center for International Studies will held on Wednesday, September 6 at 4:00 p.m. with a panel discussion. Panelists will be Rev. Edward “Monk” Malloy, C.S.C., president emeritus; Rev. Brian Daley, S.J., professor of theology; Alan Dowty, professor of political science; Tzvi Novick, professor of theology; and Michael Pippenger.
The exhibit’s opening reception will follow at 6:00 p.m. on the main floor of the Hesburgh Library. All events are open to the public; those planning to attend are asked to register here before September 1, 2017.
The University of Notre Dame offers its sincere gratitude to the Consulate General of Israel to the Midwest for the generous loan of the photographs in the Building Bridges of Faith exhibition.
