27th Commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi (Kwibuka 27)

In honor of the International Day of Reflection on the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, established by the United Nations, please join the Notre Dame Institute for Advanced Study (NDIAS) and the Rwandan-American Community of the Midwest on Wednesday, April 7, 2021 for the 27th Commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. 

The event consists of an online panel discussion (3:30-5:00 p.m. EDT) followed by a commemoration ceremony (6:00-8:00 p.m. EDT). You are welcome to attend either or both portions of the event.

The afternoon panel, hosted by the NDIAS, will highlight lessons learned from Rwanda and will feature:

  • Fiacre Bienvenu – Visiting Assistant Professor of Political Science and Africana Studies at the College of Wooster
  • Rev. Daniel Groody, C.S.C. (moderator) – Vice President, Associate Provost, and Associate Professor of Theology and Global Affairs at the University of Notre Dame
  • Emmanuel Katongole – Professor of Theology and Peace Studies at the University of Notre Dame
  • Hollie Nyseth Brehm – Faculty Fellow at the Notre Dame Institute for Advanced Study and Associate Professor of Sociology at the Ohio State University
  • Rachel Sweet – Assistant Professor of Global Affairs at the University of Notre Dame
  • Ernesto Verdeja – Associate Professor of Political Science and Peace Studies at the University of Notre Dame

Each panelist will speak briefly and there will then be time for Q&A.

Following the discussion, the NDIAS will join the Rwandan-American Community of the Midwest for a ceremony commemorating the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. The ceremony will include reflections from the Rwandan community and a keynote address by Professor Mathilde Mukantabana, Ambassador of the Republic of Rwanda to the United States. This year’s theme for the ceremony is “Remember – Unite – Renew.”
