For the Planet and the Poor: This conference, organized by Notre Dame’s new Keough School of Global Affairs, brings together students and faculty with leading thinkers from the worlds of development policy and practice, government, the Church, and other religious bodies to reflect on the events of the previous year and chart a way forward.
We are witnessing an extraordinary moment in the history of global efforts to eliminate extreme poverty and preserve the natural environment. Never before have international development organizations, national governments, the Catholic Church, and other religious and faith-based organizations been so closely aligned in a campaign to address the most daunting challenges facing humanity and the planet. The surprising convergence of Pope Francis’s encyclical on the environment, Laudato Si’: On Care for Our Common Home, with his support of the Sustainable Development Goals to “end poverty, fight inequality and injustice, and tackle climate change by 2030,” have presented us with a remarkable moment of opportunity.
