Archbishop Michael Fitzgerald is a member of the Society of Missionaries of Africa and was the papal nuncio to Egypt and delegate to the Arab League from 2006 until his retirement in 2012. He is considered one of the Roman Catholic Church’s leading experts on Islam. Previously, he had been secretary (1987-2002) and then president (2002-2006) of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue (PCID); he was ordained bishop in 1991 and archbishop in 2002 upon his appointment as PCID president. He has also taught at the Pontifical Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies and at the University of Makerere, Kampala, Uganda. He studied Arabic at the University of London and has long been a strong advocate of interreligious dialogue.
