Notre Dame as a Catholic Institution Discussion

Some people argue that if Notre Dame is to be taken seriously in her dialogue with the mainstream culture, she needs to differentiate herself from overtly Catholic universities like the Franciscan University of Steubenville and be confident enough in her Catholic identity to be able to question it. Others have claimed that such an attitude makes Notre Dame’s Catholic identity tenuous, or worse, non-existent and, as a Catholic university, Notre Dame should make sure her graduates have a good understanding of the Catholic faith. Furthermore, some argue that as America’s preeminent Catholic university, Notre Dame needs to faithfully represent and uphold Catholic teaching. So what do you think? Join Senior Michael Mercurio as he leads a discussion on the topic of Notre Dame as a Catholic Institution.
