Christianity & Judaism in Antiquity
The Christianity & Judaism in Antiquity (CJA) program concentrates on the formation, meaning, and interpretation of Jewish and Christian scripture in the ancient world.
What will I study?
The CJA program encompasses four disciplines:
- Hebrew Bible/Old Testament
- Second Temple Judaism (including the Dead Sea Scrolls) and early Rabbinic Judaism
- New Testament
- Patristic/early Christian studies
While these disciplines are frequently studied in isolation from one another, in CJA, they are studied together for their mutually illuminating interrelationships and the light they shed on the living traditions of both Judaism and Christianity. At the same time, the integrity of each discipline is respected.
Judaism is explored in its own right as well as in its relationship to Christianity. Christianity is explored by itself as well as in its dependence upon Judaism and its conscious, emerging distinction from Judaism.
Students major in either Hebrew Bible and Second Temple Judaism or New Testament and early Christianity, but a general knowledge of the whole area is to be included in their course work. Students are also immersed in the methods appropriate to study of the Ancient Near East and the Greco-Roman world, along with the historical and linguistic skills required to engage in this study.
Because the program makes its home within the context of a Catholic theology department, our study of the living traditions of Judaism and Christianity connects students to the wider intellectual enterprise of the various concentrations of theological study in the department, where the study of Scripture is the “soul” of theology (Dei Verbum VI).
