Profile
Krieg specializes in historical-systematic theology, especially in Christology and German Catholic theology. He recently completed Franz Jaegerstaetter's Prison Letters and Diaries (September 2009), which required translating and providing commentary for the writings of the Austrian martyr Jaegerstaetter who was executed by the Third Reich on August 9, 1943, and was declared "blessed" by the Church on October 26, 2007. As a recipient of a fellowship from the Henry Luce III Foundation, Krieg researched and wrote Catholic Theologians in Nazi Germany (2004). Krieg is the editor and translator of Romano Guardini: Spiritual Writings (2005) as well as the editor of Romano Guardini: Proclaiming the Sacred in a Modern World (1995). He is the author of Story-Shaped Christology (1988), Karl Adam: Catholicism in German Culture (1992), and Romano Guardini: A Precursor of Vatican II (1997). Krieg is currently working on a book concerning the Paschal Mystery of Jesus Christ.
Krieg has published theological articles in America, Comment, Commonweal, The Heythrop Journal, The Irish Theological Quarterly, The Journal of Religious Thought, Theologische Quartalschrift, Theological Studies, and Worship. He was a member of the editorial board of Theological Studies from 1998 to 2007.
Krieg enjoys instructing undergraduates in his "first course" on the Bible and the Christian tradition as well as teaching graduate students in his courses on the "person" and "work" of Jesus Christ. He has received the University's Madden Teaching Award (1997) and Kaneb Teaching Award (2006). After teaching at King's College (Wilkes-Barre, Penn.) from 1975 to 1977, he joined the theology faculty at the University of Notre Dame in August 1977.
