Ashley's scholarly interests include political and liberation theology, Christian spirituality, and the dialogue between theology and science. His book, Interruptions: Mysticism, Politics and Theology in the Work of Johann Baptist Metz (1998) builds on his editing and/or translating of three books by this German political theologian. As Visiting Scholar at the Boston College Center for Ignatian spirituality (1997-98), Ashley began his current project: a book on the impact of Ignatian spirituality on three 20th-century Jesuit theologians.
