This relatively new program is a cutting-edge response to a growing need in the Church—the preparation of students for pastoral liturgical music ministry. The curriculum embraces the musical, liturgical, and pastoral dimensions.

Key Competencies

The M.S.M. develops the following competencies:

  • A professional level of musical training in either organ or choral music
  • A working knowledge of the worship life of Christian faiths
  • Pastoral formation
  • Integration of pastoral, musical, and liturgical dimensions        

Sacred Music at Notre Dame

This program is part of a larger Theology Department initiative on music and the sacred arts. The program draws upon the resources and faculty of both the Theology and Music departments. Indeed, the remarkable artistic and religious resources of the entire University of Notre Dame come into play:

of liturgical music in your diocese or parish. It consists of a two-week intensive experience for liturgical music ministers to be held on the campus of the University of Notre Dame during the summer.

The DeBartolo Center for the Performing Arts houses the Reyes Organ and Choral Hall, meant specifically for sacred organ or choral music. The centerpiece of the room is a 35-stop, 2,551-pipe organ.
