The M.A. (Theology) degree program seeks to serve the following constituencies:
- those teaching theology at the high school level
- those seeking to serve the church or diocese in an enhanced capacity
- those seeking theological training to augment their work in other professional contexts (i.e, hospitals, social work, etc.)
- those desiring personal enrichment
Application and Enrollment
- Registration:
1. Continuing Degree Students must register for summer courses by using the University's Web registration. This information can be viewed in "insideND".
2. Non-degree Students must apply online by using the Summer Session online application. - All degree and non-degree students must "web enroll" through "insideND" each semester.
These steps must be completed by each student for every summer session in which the student attends classes, uses University facilities, or receives a graduate degree.

Admission Prerequisites for Degree Seeking M.A. Theology Students
- A bachelor’s degree
- At least 6 credit hours of course work in theology or religious studies
- All applicable transcripts
- Three letters of recommendation
- Statement of intent
- The Graduate Record Examination (with minimum scores of 500 in both the verbal and quantitative sections, or 4/6 in the new analytic section
Graduate School Admissions Requirements for Degree-Seeking Applicants:
- Complete and electronically submit the online application form
- Submit a statement of intent through the online application system
- Submit a curriculum vitae or resume (recommended) through the online application
- Arrange for three letters of recommendation to be submitted through the online recommendation system associated with the online application
- Submit the application fee by credit card, check, or money order using the payment system associated with the online application
- Request official transcripts from each post-secondary institution attended and have them mailed directly to the Office of Graduate Admissions (please note that transcripts may not be attached to the online application)
- Arrange for the submission of official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test scores
- Arrange for submission of official GRE Subject Test scores if required by the department
Deadline for Application for Degree-seeking Students
The application deadline as a "Degree Seeking Student" for Summer Session to the M.A. (Theology) degree program is "April 15", Fall Semester is July 15, and for Spring Semester is November 1.
To expedite the processing of applications, the online application should be completed and submitted by the above deadline.

A new degree seeking student is required to complete the "online application" with Graduate Admissions to become degree seeking.

International Student Services and Activites
This office advises all international students on matters related to maintaining immigration status and offers other services such as issuance of I-20/DS-2019, and assistance in applying for employment authorization and change of status. http://issa.nd.edu/
Certification
For those who wish to take advantage of course offerings in the M.A. program without pursuing the degree itself, a certificate option is available. This enables students to take courses for credit without being liable to specific degree requirements or comprehensive examinations. Upon completion of a minimum of 24 credit hours, the Department of Theology will issue a testimonial certificate.
Non-degree Credit Hours
Students may apply up to 12 hours of coursework taken at Notre Dame before admission to their degree program. Hours taken beyond 12 hours as a non-degree student will not count towards the 42 hours of degree program coursework.
All students are responsible for monitoring their respective hours of course work.
Degree Eligibility
A master's program that is pursued during the summer and the academic year must be completed within five years. A student attending summer session only must complete all requirements within seven years.
