Graduate Programs
Graduate Students as Colleagues:
- Instruct undergraduates as teaching assistants.
- Participate in departmental colloquia and events organized by the Graduate Theological Society
- Nurture their spiritual lives at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, the Grotto, and the Mary, Seat of Wisdom Chapel in Malloy Hall.
The Department of Theology offers graduate students a choice of five outstanding degree-granting programs. You can choose the course of study best suited to your career aspirations. All five programs offer Notre Dame’s distinctive combination of resources in teaching, research, the dynamic life of a supportive academic community, and a well-rounded, person-centered preparation for service to the Church.
Doctoral Program (Ph.D.)
As one of North America’s most important ecumenical centers for advanced study in theology, Notre Dame trains students from various denominations to be outstanding researchers and teachers. Students may specialize in
- Christianity and Judaism in Antiquity
- The History of Christianity
- Liturgical Studies
- Moral Theology/Christian Ethics
- Systematic Theology
- World Religions and World Church
Master of Divinity (M.Div.)
One of the premier ministry preparation programs in the country, the Master of Divinity program offers Catholic lay students free tuition and 100% placement rate as they prepare for learned and effective service in the Roman Catholic Church. Preparation combines a rigorous curriculum, field experience, and spiritual formation. Subject matter embraces Scripture, the History of Christianity, Liturgical Studies, Moral Theology/Christian Ethics, and Systematic Theology.
Master of Theological Studies (M.T.S.)
Notre Dame’s M.T.S. program trains graduate students for future doctoral work in the disciplines of theology. Two years of full-time course work combine with participation in the Masters Colloquium plus competency in one modern language (and, in some cases, ancient language requirements). Those enrolled in the program receive free tuition.
Master of Sacred Music (M.S.M.)
This recently established program responds to the Church’s need for professional liturgists and musicians. Administered by the Department of Theology and overseen by an interdepartmental committee including Music Department faculty, the program provides advanced education in sacred music—either in organ or voice—alongside basic competence in liturgy.
Master of Arts (M.A.) Summer
Master of Arts students receive a terminal degree in theology after learning about the classical areas of theological inquiry and acquiring a level of expertise in one of those areas. Recipients of the M.A. are well-suited to serve in valuable roles such as high school religious education, parish and diocesan ministries, and health care and social work ministries. One of the M.A.'s most attractive features is its flexible schedule, with two three-week modules each summer and opportunities to take two-week courses in Tantur, Israel and Tucson, Arizona. Students can complete coursework over five summers and also participate in online courses.
